Jeannie and Andy HunterAndy (aka The Huntz) and Jeannie Hunter run Edinburgh’s original indoor cycling and spinning studio – LifesCycle. They have created a unique space where people can have fun and feel comfortable no matter what their age, level of fitness or body shape. They welcome everyone into their LifesCycle family and offer plenty of encouragement and support.

1. What are your backgrounds and why did you choose spinning?

Jeannie: In terms of fitness I trained in dance and exercise to music and have ridden a bike all my life. I worked for the Scottish Government for most of my professional career. Andy is an ex actor and is also a professional puppeteer. He has a rugby background, he played to a decent level himself and was a coach for his sons, one of whom played for Scotland.

We have both always loved high energy aerobic type exercise and we met at a boxing fitness class at Marcos Gym in Edinburgh, which was a really basic, but super friendly community gym in the centre of Edinburgh. The sessions were run by ex commonwealth Champion boxer Jackie Brown and we did them 5 times a week, lots of shadow boxing and skipping to great tunes. When that ended, we were looking for something with the same buzz and energy, so found and developed our spinning habit while travelling in Spain and Italy. There is no better feeling than the endorphin rush in a jumping, driven and motivated class with great music. We chose to open LifesCycle, because there was nothing like it in Edinburgh and because we wanted to bring spinning to everyone!

LifesCycle Edinburgh2. Why is LifesCycle such a unique experience?

We think it is because we welcome everyone and treat people how we would like to be treated. It is not a typical gym and we think that is why people like it. We love to see people happy and feeling good about themselves, so we really try to look after everyone. We hope we have the right mix between real cycling training focused sessions and fun, general, fitness based high energy sessions for everyone. We have a great team of instructors who all are really committed to the LifesCycle ethos too. To us, the music is really important and we use visuals in many of the sessions too.

CannaIt is also the people, the LifesCyclers! They are amazing. Oh and of course Canna (the LifesCycle dog).

3. Do you offer personal training sessions as well as group classes?

We offer newbies induction sessions in Spinning, which can be like one to one Spin training sessions as we feel it is really important for folks new to LifesCycle to learn the basics and have a comfortable start to their journey with us. We also have a personal training studio where you can sign up to training which is complementary to your Spinning.

Spinning NXT bikes4. What equipment do you use at LifesCycle?

We have Spinner NXT bikes, they are chain driven and provide the nearest to a road riding experience you can have on an indoor bike.

5. Can you explain the importance of the link between physical activity and improved mental health?
lifescycleExercise is so good on so many levels. It makes you feel less stressed, it boosts your happy hormones and feeling better about yourself can make you feel more self confident and therefore happier. Sometimes it can get euphoric at LifesCycle and we love that people go out with a smile on their face…a good start!

And just for fun…

6. Can you tell us something that might surprise us?

Jeannie: After being marooned on a water taxi in the lagoon, Andy and I were held up at gunpoint on the Rialto Bridge in Venice, by an underworld gang and managed to escape by mingling with a group of Japanese tourists passing by at an opportune moment.

Spinathon at LifesCycle7. What makes you feel happy?

Apart from obviously spinning and hanging out at LifesCycle with good friends, our boys, the sea, the mediterranean sun on our faces, walking on the beach with Canna. Compassion and kindness to people and animals.

8. If you could wake up in the body of another person (just for one day) who would it be and why?

Quite happy being us…

9. Music is an important part of your classes at LifesCycle. You have the chance to time travel to any gig or concert that has ever taken place – which one would it be and why?

Andy: Woodstock 1969, because it has been one of the most influential gigs ever. For me, at that time all the sounds I loved were happening at this place full of peace, love and music.

Jeannie: Inxs with the one and only Michael Hutchence, Wembley 1991, because he was one of the amazing artists ever.
