Forensic Mind Reader Colin CloudDescribed by Uri Geller as “one of the greatest thought readers of all time” and discussed in the media as a real-life Sherlock, Colin Cloud is a forensic scientist who mixes mind magic and brain science and has been predicted by his peers as the next big thing in the world of mentalism.

Colin is a TV performer, after dinner keynote speaker, consultant, coach and comedian who continuously renders his audiences speechless and leaves them wondering if he is really human!

1. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you discovered mentalism?

I’ve always had a genuine fascination with Sherlock Holmes, ever since I was a child and stumbled upon the original books. It’s led to me going to university at 15 to study forensic investigation and now travelling the world demonstrating my Sherlock-esque skills. So mentalism is one part of that, but there is definitely much more going on at the same time.

Colin Cloud2. You are performing your new show ‘EXPOSÉ at The Edinburgh International Magic Festival next month. Can you give us any insights into what people can expect?

My new show is an insight into the human condition; How our thinking affects our view of the world and how our interaction with the world affects our thinking. It now goes beyond me demonstrating my unique skill set and now challenges people to think about their world with a different perspective. Obviously I’ll still be fun and funny, I’ll still be reading people, revealing naughty memories and gambling money … all the stuff you’d want to see. But on top of that I’ll also be risking my life as I go up against a lethal injection and I will then have to hunt the streets of Edinburgh to find the antidote. So you know, it’s definitely different and more challenging then any of my other shows.

3. What has been the absolute highlight of your career so far?

I have so many. Performing in London’s West End for three months hosting and staring in ‘The Illusionists‘. Consulting with Mark Gatiss on the BBC Sherlock Christmas special for the ‘iWonder’ guide. Or being invited on to ‘This Morning‘ as a regular is hugely flattering!

… There have been so many and I already know what other projects are in the works, so I have so much more to look forward to too. I’m a lucky boy.

4. Do you ever get nervous in front of a live audience and has anything ever gone wrong?

No. Never. It’s not like anyone has died! Well, except last year in my show ‘Kills‘ when I killed a random member of the audience without going near them to prove that I could get away with murder. Or this year when I get injected myself with poison which is pretty deadly. On reflection, people can die. Awww man, I should really take more care to ensure nothing can go wrong. Ever. I’m nervous now. Why have you done this to me?!?

5. What advice can you give to someone who wants to start their own journey
into mentalism?

Read the classics, be original, find other outside inspirations as just mentalism can get boring fast. Don’t copy what’s being done already. Break the rules and devise something new. Then you will excel.

And just for fun…

6. If you could read anybody’s mind from the past, who would you choose and why?

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Mainly because he’s the man who started this all off for me.

7. Tell us something that might surprise us?

If I told you which of Holly’s secrets I whispered in her ear, you’d be shocked….instead I’ll just wait and whisper one of your readers secrets in their ear when I meet them.

8. Who would you rather take to the pub (and why), Simon Cowell or Jonathan Ross?

They were both lovely, but Michael McIntyre was my favourite (sorry guys!). We just had such good fun filming his show for the BBC. So Michael, the outsider-underdog, wins!

9. Have you got any heroes?

I love the writing of Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat on Sherlock. I utterly admire what they’ve done with the classics. I don’t know that they’re heroes, but they’re certainly huge inspirations.

10. What is your favourite quote?

“Do me” – Holly Willoughby
